Community Development

In our Community Development category, we implement projects that serve the community as a whole, including supporting churches, community centers, infrastructure repairs and economic opportunities.

OUR FIRST PROJECT

A little over one year after the advancement of ISIS, on November 21, 2015, we completed phase one of a community center that served four villages in Southern Nineveh. We were blown away by the psychological impact this had on the people. After being idle and distraught over their losses for so long, the community gained hope and began organizing and rebuilding on their own. The project was completed in four phases.

FIXING ALL OF THE MAIN ROADS IN TESQOPA

These roads have been badly damaged due to military presence for years, costing the people of the town money on cars breaking down. We are partnering up Abona Salar and the Chaldean Catholic Church. We have finished 80% of the 46 locations identified.

PLANTING 80 TREES IN BAKHDEDA

On day 4 of our 2019 mission trip in Iraq, we planted trees in Bakhdeda. When we arrived, we had 80 trees waiting for us. We started by removing the rubble, planting the tree and packed the holes with fresh soil. We had such an excellent experience. The people in the town came out to see what we were doing, and were excited. You might say these are just trees...what’s the big deal. In Bakhdeda trees help prevent dust, they’re green year round and great for holiday decorations. This is the downtown area where the community gathers. The project was requested by the people of the town. Shlama donors fully funded this project.
